A New Headmaster for the Day!

11 June 2024

A winning prize at the BPS Summer Ball Auction was the opportunity for a Beacon boy to become ‘Headmaster for the Day’. Thomas L (Year 4) was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to step into Mr Baker’s shoes and take the leadership reins for the day.

Given that the UEFA 2024 tournament is about to start, his first decision was to initiate a non-uniform day for the whole school, requesting that all boys come to school dressed wearing kit from their favourite football team.

On the morning of his new role, Thomas L arrived at school on Monday morning eager to embrace his duties as Headmaster. He kicked off with a debrief from Mr Baker. Thomas then gave a presentation to our whole school in Assembly, kindly supported with his older brothers in Year 6 and Year 8. They announced the winner of the Kindness Cup, awarded Headmaster’s Commendations, read out postcards and discussed House point winners.

His schedule for the rest of the day was jam-packed with important tasks and meetings, including:

  • Snacks with the Estates team
  • Meeting the Catering team and enjoying a tour of the kitchen whilst discussing the lunch choice of Chilli Con Carne and Rice to be served as the main lunchtime option for the school
  • An exciting virtual reality demo with the IT team, using their state-of-the-art VR kit
  • An uplifting view of The Beacon from the rooftop of our Osborne Building
  • Lunch at a dedicated table with close friends
  • An introduction to the Marketing department, copywriting a piece for the weekly ‘Lighthouse’ newsletter and choosing photos.
  • Meeting and dismissing our Little Beacons from school

Thomas enjoyed a well-rounded headship experience, where he was able to see a different side to The Beacon. His day finished off with afternoon tea in the Headmaster’s office, where Mr L handed back the reins to Mr Baker!

A message from Thomas:

“Today, I was Headmaster. I have had a great day. I held the Monday morning Assembly with my brothers, I had a tour of the kitchen with Dino who is in charge of the food for our lunch. I also had a flapjack with Daniel, Jhonny and Lee from the maintenance team. I then went to IT and had a go on the virtual reality which I enjoyed.

I went to Jim’s office and looked at the security cameras and then put on a safety hat and went on the roof, which was pretty cool. After this, I went for lunch with my friends and ate chilli con-carne. In the afternoon I spent some time with marketing, dismissed Little Beacons and had tea with Mr Baker.

I hope you all enjoyed dressing in which team you support for the Euros.

I had a great day.

Best wishes,

Thomas L”
