Admissions

Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision, so it’s essential you feel happy and confident throughout the admissions process. Our experienced and friendly Registrar, Mrs Jane Baines, will support you through this time as we welcome you to our Beacon Community. Please do contact Jane directly with any queries on admissions@beaconschool.co.uk or call on 01494 432764.

There are three main entry points into The Beacon – Reception (age 4), Year 3 (age 7) and Year 7 (age 11). However, places in other year groups do become available from time to time, so please do enquire.

You may register your son for admission at any time after birth. Early registration is advised and we encourage families to visit The Beacon during the School day to see the School in action and to meet our Headmaster, Will Phelps.

Admissions Enquiries for 2020 and Future Years during COVID-19

As The Beacon’s School site is currently closed for visitors during the school day to ensure the safety of our boys, our Admissions enquiry process has been adapted.

Open Day and Virtual Meetings

We know that nothing can replicate a visit to The Beacon to see our School in action, to chat with our boys and to meet our Headmaster, Will Phelps.

Our Headmaster or one of our Sectional Heads would be delighted to meet prospective parents via video call to discuss your son(s) and our inspiring school.  On selected Saturdays in September and October, our Registrar would welcome socially-distanced ‘Talk & Tours‘ on-site to meet any parents wishing to explore The Beacon.

Please contact Jane on registrar@beaconschool.co.uk to arrange a mutually convenient time for either a video call or our on-site ‘Talk & Tour’.

Alternatively, you can join our Open Day on Saturday 10 October 2020 from 09:00 to 16:00, when our team will take you on an individual, socially-distance tour and give you their personal insights as to why The Beacon is such an outstanding school.

You may also wish to view our Virtual Open Mornings. We have hosted two events this year:

  • Whole School Virtual Open Morning with a welcome address from our Headmaster, Will Phelps, followed by a virtual tour from our Year 8 boys and talks from our senior team and Registrar.
  • Pre-Prep Virtual Open Morning to enable you to see and hear about life in Reception to Year 2.  After a virtual tour of the school, it will give you the opportunity to hear from the key members of the Pre-Prep team and a closing address from our Headmaster, Will Phelps.

We hope that you have had a chance to explore our School remotely via our website and our Social Media channels (Facebook and Twitter). These will all give you a good sense of the incredible ethos of our School and its complete educational and pastoral approach to teaching and learning.

Our virtual tour will give you some insight into our wonderful facilities. Due to the dedication of our teaching staff, The Beacon has an enviable reputation for academic excellence. Please do look at our destination senior schools, our Buckinghamshire 11+ test results and our boys’ success in gaining entry and winning scholarships in Academia, Music, Art, Drama, Sport and Design & Technology to the very best day and boarding schools in the country.

Availability and Registering Online

Please do contact Jane directly at registrar@beaconschool.co.uk or 01494 432764.  Jane will be able to advise you of availability for this academic year and beyond.

Admissions Procedures for Applications for the Current Academic Year 2020/21

We have adapted our admissions procedures during the School site closure. If you are seeking admission into The Beacon for September 2020 and there is a place available, we will ask you to complete the following steps:

  1. Register your son.
  2. Provide a copy of your son’s last full school report and any mid-term/interim reports, together with copies of any standardised test results (CATs or SATs).
  3. Provide a copy of any reports that you may hold relating to your son’s educational development such as an Educational Psychologist report.
  4. We may request a reference from your son’s current class teacher or to invite your son to come in on a Saturday to meet the appropriate Section Head and undertake a verbal and non-verbal standardised reasoning test for boys applying for a place in Year 2 and above.
  5. Following a successful review of your son’s application, an offer letter will be emailed to you.
  6. A scanned copy of your signed Acceptance Form to the Registrar, together with payment of your deposit, will confirm a place for your son for September.

We do understand that you may need further information and advice from our staff and Jane will be happy to arrange calls/video calls with:

Will Phelps, the Headmaster
Ryan Steward, Head of Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2)
Jemima Elcomb, Head of Lower School (Years 3 and 4)
Stephen Miles, Head of Middle School (Years 5 and 6)
Edward Tenison, Head of Upper School (Years 7 and 8)
Nikki Olhausen, Director of Studies, for advice on 11+ and 13+ and senior school requirements.

Our specialist staff are also happy to contact parents to provide further information about our Music, Drama and Sports provision – all of which we are incredibly proud of at The Beacon.

We look forward to welcoming you to The Beacon.
