The Beacon has a large and vibrant Upper School, which comprises Years 7 and 8. The opportunity to mature for two years at the upper end of the Prep School gives your son time, space and security to explore the subjects he really loves, without the upheaval of a new and different school environment.
Life in the Upper School provides the boys with opportunities to take on leadership roles such as Head Boy, Head of House and Head Chorister. All boys are given greater responsibility and independence in making decisions and are encouraged to mentor younger boys and act as role models.
Our Upper School prepares the boys fully for senior school and beyond, enabling them to grow into confident young men.
The Upper School curriculum is enriched by our Prep School Baccalaureate (PSB) programme, which is an outstanding two-year programme of study for pupils in Years 7 and 8. It provides a means to combine rigorous academic standards with a broad and balanced curriculum. We have the freedom to pick elements of both the Common Entrance and National Curriculum programmes of study and models of assessment.
The PSB also promotes vital skills in independent learning, in the appropriate use of technology and in critical thinking and analysis. The programme enables the development of leadership, mentoring and team-working skills for the boys.
Using this programme of study, Beacon boys are extremely well-prepared for entry to any senior independent school, whether it uses the PSB, Common Entrance or its own entrance exams.
We work closely with our Upper School boys and their parents to ensure that they choose the right senior school for each individual when they leave us at the end of Year 8. Our highly-experienced Upper School team guide and prepare boys for scholarship applications and we are delighted that, in the past few years, Beacon boys have received Academic, Music, Drama, Art, Design & Technology and Sports scholarships to Eton College, Harrow, Rugby School, Wellington College, Merchant Taylors’ School, Berkhamsted, Millfield, Haileybury, St Edward’s Oxford, Charterhouse, Radley, Ampleforth, Oundle, Shiplake College, Marlborough College and Bradfield College, amongst others.

The Leavers’ Programme in your son’s last six weeks of his Beacon journey helps him to develop essential life skills and offers him a varied range of fun and challenging opportunities as he enters the final preparation for his next stage of education. The programme involves the Enterprise Challenge, First Aid and Lifesavers workshops, career forums, debates, charity events, a major Performing Arts production and an outward-bound residential trip to Cornbury in Oxford, where their survival and leadership skills are put to the test for five days. Beacon boys leave us as mature, confident and kind young men, fully prepared for their future steps in education and adult life beyond.
