A Visit From Karl Nova – National Poetry Day

5 October 2023

Our Beacon boys from Years 3-8 were treated on Tuesday to a special Assembly and workshops to celebrate National Poetry Day.

Karl Nova, a hip hop musician and performance poet, captivated everyone with tales of his extraordinary childhood from his early life in a one-bedroom flat in north London with his mother, primary school days in Suffolk with an ‘adopted’ grandmother, Mrs V Butterick and then transplantation at the age of 7 into the alien world of his wealthy father in Lagos, Nigeria. Using the 2023 World Poetry Day theme of Refuge, he showed how words and books had provided him with the comfort and security his life was often lacking.

With humour, rhythm and bucket loads of street cred, Karl coaxed his Year 6 and 7 workshop students into becoming poets themselves. Everyone was inspired, the boys were won over by Karl’s ease and charm and their views on poetry underwent rather a transformation!
