With Wimbledon coming up in a couple of weeks there is a concern if any British female tennis players will qualify. With recent events there have been no British female players qualified for the French Open recently. The causes of some of the British women players pulling out was due to injuries. For example, Emma Raducanu, after winning the US Open got injured. She is a very young and talented player who has been a very high hope for female tennis. Lots of the great female tennis players such as Serena Williams have now retired and now we need younger sports women to step up and become the new superstars.
We interviewed Mr. Winter at The Beacon School, Head of the Tennis team. When asked about injuries in tennis he agreed that the younger generation to step up, commenting that “In my opinion I think that the woman’s British team isn’t the strongest at the moment”. He also said “Lots of the British superstars have retired now such as Serena Williams and now we need the young players in the academy’s to step up and take their role and win tournaments such as Wimbledon, US Open and French Open. But it is a big step getting through the National Juniors but it is an even bigger leap getting to the top of professional tennis to compete”.
Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart were eliminated in qualifying for the French Open after not grabbing their places in the main tournament taking place next week. The British Grand Slam champion, Raducanu, has not entered the tournament after undergoing an ankle operation. Hopefully she will be ready for Rolland Garros and Wimbledon to get another Grand Slam. Ex-British tennis player, Laura Robson, has said that “Emma Raducanu shouldn’t even watch the French Open”.
Let us all hope that Radacanu will recover swiftly and stage a comeback to win another Grand Slam.
