Exploring the Ships That Shaped History
On Tuesday, our Year 8 trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard proved to be an outstanding and memorable experience for all involved. The day began with a visit to HMS Victory, where the group took part in the excellent audio tour. This brought the ship’s remarkable history to life and gave the boys a fascinating insight into life at sea during Nelson’s era. Walking the decks and exploring the different areas of the ship helped everyone appreciate its importance in British naval history.
The next stop was the Mary Rose exhibition, which was truly captivating. There was so much to see, from the carefully preserved artefacts to the interactive displays that explained the story of the ship and its crew. The exhibition provided a unique glimpse into Tudor life and sparked plenty of questions and discussions among our pupils.
After a well-earned lunch in the Boathouse, Year 8 headed to HMS Warrior. This was another highlight of the day, as they were treated to an informative talk and a live demonstration showing how one of the ship’s heavy cannons was loaded and operated. Seeing the process in action helped bring naval history to life in a memorable way.
Overall, the trip was superb from start to finish. The group thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the day and gained a wealth of historical knowledge through a range of engaging and hands-on experiences.
