Rooted in Responsibility

The importance of sustainability and environmental issues are embedded in our core curriculum across all years. We make use of our vast grounds and varied clubs to extend this focus. We are always looking for ways to improve our eco-credentials, introducing initiatives such as extended recycling schemes, swapping to a green energy supplier, tree-planting on site, reducing energy use, saving water and encouraging boys to walk to school or to use our extensive transport route service.

Recycling

Our whole Beacon Community are encouraged to become more sustainable. Recycling bins are sited around the school for our boys and staff to recycle paper, food, glass and batteries. Our kitchen teams are committed to improving our sustainability, and all our waste is recycled. As most of our food is cooked on site using local ingredients, our requirement for packaging is reduced. However, 100% of our plastic packaging is now fully recyclable or biodegradable. The boys have also been encouraged to recycle books, shoes and clothes through various charities.

Eco Council

Our Eco Council comprises of twelve pupils and several members of staff who meet several times each term to develop green ideas and to plan initiatives and campaigns. They help inspire and motivate the whole Beacon Community through local litter picks, recycling schemes and sharing green top tips in our weekly Newsletter. Recent initiatives have included encouraging parents to turn off their car engines when collecting their sons at the end of the school day, making bug hotels and bird boxes, the development of a tranquil nature garden, and the planting of perennials to encourage a wide range of birds and insects.

Kitchen Gardens

Planting, growing and cooking with our own herbs and vegetables are a great way for all our boys to get more involved in our bid to be sustainable. In Pre-Prep, the boys are proud to grow their own peas, tomatoes, beans and potatoes in the Pre-Prep Garden, while the boys in Year 3 chose to plant a variety of different herbs, learning about plant life-cycles at the same time. Our Mindful Gardening Club, which takes place in our Kitchen Garden area is a fabulous opportunity for all boys in Years 4-8 to get involved.

Cooking & Nutrition

Cooking & Nutrition lessons have a strong educational and practical focus on sustainability. Boys in Years 4-8 learn about climate change affecting food production and explore how to use leftover vegetables and meat to make a quick meal solution. House points are awarded to boys who demonstrate sustainability in the home.
