Year 7 Trip to the Lake District 2026

Hot days and great adventures

Two words not often associated with the Lake District sum up our Year 7 experience last week: hot and sunny! The group arrived on Monday afternoon at the YHA beside Lake Windermere and were soon rambling on into Ambleside for pizza at Zeffirelli’s restaurant. Then it was the first of four evenings in the park beside the lake to play some games or just relax in the shade.

Fortunately, Tuesday was a day on and in the water — kayaking on the lake (with plenty of opportunities for splashing about) and gorge scrambling up Stickle Ghyll in Great Langdale. This latter involved climbing waterfalls and jumping into rock pools; unsurprisingly it was voted the best activity of the week.

Wednesday was the big walk — a climb up to the top of Wansfell Pike with spectacular views across the lakes and mountains when they got to the top. Back down again it was time for a well-deserved ice cream and a chance to jump in the lake and cool off.

It was even hotter on Thursday, so our trip attendees were all glad of another water-day — an epic trip on giant stand-up paddleboards followed by raft building, which caused much hilarity when both of the rival craft collapsed on their maiden voyages about two metres from shore!

Throughout the week, our pupils faced many challenges —personal, social and environmental — yet overcame them all with a smile and an impressive can-do attitude that was shared by the entire group. The YHA staff and the guides on our activities commented on how wonderful our group had been and what a pleasure it was to spend time in their company, a sentiment shared by their Beacon teachers. Year 7 made us proud!
