Preparing pupils for their next steps
Each year, our Year 8 pupils take part in our Shining Futures Programme, a bespoke initiative designed to prepare them for life beyond prep school. From practical life skills workshops to expert, personalised guidance and entrance exam preparation, the programme equips them with the confidence, knowledge and skills to prepare them for their next chapter.
BBC Young Reporters Day
As part of the programme, Year 8 pupils took part in our annual BBC Young Reporters Day, stepping into the role of journalists to research current affairs and produce their own news stories. Their articles explored a wide range of thought-provoking topics, including AI in education, the psychology of cricket and the rise of young entrepreneurs, before being published on our website. Empathy Workshop
We were delighted to once again welcome Empathy Action back to The Beacon for an immersive workshop. Our Spinney Theatre was transformed into an interactive environment where theatrical performances, audiovisual experiences and educational activities were combined to deepen our Year 8 pupils’ understanding of significant global issues. The workshop encouraged pupils to develop empathy, broaden their perspectives and reflect on the challenges faced by communities around the world.
Trips
Throughout the year, our Year 8 pupils embarked on a wide range of educational trips, giving them the opportunity to broaden their horizons and embrace new challenges. From the Battlefields Residential in Belgium, where they gained a deeper understanding of the events and impact of the First World War, to exploring London’s vibrant Spitalfields Market on a guided food tour that introduced them to cuisines from around the world, each experience enriched their learning beyond the classroom.
Their experiences also included trips to Morzine, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Thorpe Park, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, Wembley Stadium, Laser Quest and the Imperial War Museum Duxford, ensuring a memorable final year.
Redbull STEMx Race Day
This year, we were delighted to welcome a new external provider to the Shining Futures Programme with an exciting Red Bull STEMx Race Day. Delivered by Oracle Red Bull Racing in partnership with Milton Keynes College Group, the initiative is designed to inspire the next generation of Formula One engineers by showcasing the exciting opportunities within Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Pupils took part in a series of interactive activity zones that brought the world of motorsport to life. From tackling media and broadcast challenges to working together on Formula One-style pit stop tyre changes, designing their own race cars and attending an inspiring careers talk, the day gave pupils a hands-on insight into the fast-paced world of Formula One.
MasterCook & Come Dine With Us
Towards the end of term, the year group took part in their final MasterCook competition, judged by Henry Cripps , owner of award winning gastro pub; The Three Oaks in Gerrards Cross. After receiving feedback on their dishes, Year 8 put on an impressive pop-up restaurant for Come Dine With Us, showcasing these dishes as canapés, starters, mains, desserts and petit fours.
Working with Younger Years
Throughout the year, our Year 8 pupils embraced opportunities to mentor and support younger members of the school community. They enjoyed reading with Pre-Prep pupils, accompanied our Little Beacons on their Welly Walk, helping to build dens, volunteered at Pre-Prep Sports Day, and worked behind the scenes to support our Year 6 production of Aladdin Jr.
These experiences fostered leadership and communication skills, whilst strengthening our school’s sense of community.
Sport
Alongside a busy calendar of fixtures, competitions and Games lessons, our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a variety of additional sporting experiences throughout their final year. Highlights included an exciting trip to Wimbledon with our tennis club, a golf day, an intense dodgeball tournament, badminton, padel and a range of other sporting activities.
Year 8 Disco
To celebrate the end of their Beacon journey, our Year 8 leavers came together for one final disco. With a DJ, illuminated dance floor, music, snacks and plenty of dancing, the evening provided a fun-filled celebration and a fitting send-off as they prepared to begin their exciting next chapter.
