Stories, Sea Shanties and a Very Special ‘Merdog’
On Tuesday 29th September, it was a case of ‘Ahoy, me hearties!’ as The Beacon boarded the good ship Sunshine to discover the world of author, illustrator and screenwriter Alex Milway’s latest series, Captain Sunshine.
Living on the south coast of England, Alex draws plenty of inspiration from life by the sea. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a lively sailor’s hornpipe, sang an original sea shanty with great gusto, and learned how to draw a penguin and a ‘merdog’ – a wonderfully imaginative cross between a mermaid and a dog.
They were then treated to the first chapter of Captain Sunshine and met some of the colourful characters aboard the cruise liner, captained by young Bella. From penguins Flip and Flop to the young entertainment team and the weathered old sea dog, Mr Tatou, there was plenty to spark the imagination.
Alex also gave an insight into his illustration work, with some of his artwork set to go on display in the Pre-Prep library. Our pupils left with a signed book, a collection of their own drawings and, no doubt, a new-found enthusiasm for life at sea!
