Sports Day 2026

Glorious sunshine, outstanding performances and new record-breakers

The long-awaited sporting event of the year for The Beacon took place on Friday 22nd May at Woodside Stadium in Watford, as pupils from Years 3 to 8 came together for our annual Sports Day. In the lead-up to the event, pupils had been sharpening their throwing techniques, improving their agility and pushing themselves to achieve new personal bests.

The day began under glorious sunshine as Years 6 to 8 took to the track, competing in a series of events for their Houses – Eddystone, Portland, Trinity and Cromer. For our Year 8 pupils, and some in Year 6, it marked a final opportunity to etch their names into Beacon history by breaking one of the school’s long-standing records, making the occasion even more special.

A wide range of events kept the competition lively throughout the day, including long jump, discus, shot put, relay races, javelin, tug of war and many more. Parents and members of our community lined up around the tracks, cheering the children on.

After several competitive events, our young athletes gathered trackside in anticipation as Headmaster Nick Baker announced the results. The Games Department stood proud with medals and trophies in hand, ready to celebrate the achievements of the day’s standout athletes.

After a short break, the track was ready to welcome Years 3 to 5. The day was particularly exciting for our Year 3 pupils, who were experiencing their very first Sports Day at the stadium. Armed with an abundance of enthusiasm, they impressed spectators throughout the afternoon, showcasing the fantastic progress they have made in their PE and Games lessons.

A special congratulations to two of our 2026 record-breakers:

Benjamin W (Year 3) – threw a cricket ball an impressive 38m beating a Beacon record held since 1980 (37.76m).

Sebi W (Year 5) – ran 100m sprint in an astonishing 13.88 seconds beating a Beacon record held since 1976 (100m in 13.9 seconds).

As the day drew to a close, we were delighted to announce the overall Sports Day champions. Congratulations to Cromer for an outstanding performance across the competition!
