Bakers Beacon Blog Week 23 2025

Dear Parents,

Some of the actions of the US Government might be getting a bad press these days but hats off to NASA and how they managed the re-entry of the Dragon capsule and egress of the ISS astronauts on Wednesday.  It said on the BBC website that the Dragon would make splashdown at 9:57pm, which I thought was quite a niche time prediction but sure enough, the capsule hit the water at precisely 9:57pm…there are clearly some very clever people working for NASA to get that level of accuracy and efficiency.   In a similar vein (and, yes, just come with me on this one…) I always look for a school production to be similarly slick and well organised; cast in the right place at the right time, lines learnt, scenery and set changes occurring without incident etc.  All true and typical of a Beacon school performance of course and an example nowhere better than this week’s Year 4 performance of ‘Dragon Days’.  Managing 72 boys to produce such a professional, complex, interactive and enjoyable performance is some feat, yet completely expected from our amazing Performing Arts Team – we have many very clever people working here too.  Take a quick look ‘behind the scenes’, as I did before the performance last night, and you will see every prop, wig and costume change laid out perfectly and methodically, ready for use by incredibly well-trained and responsive actors/nine year olds.  A Beacon performance is a truly stellar operation…

A beautiful week of weather and with spring in the air and summer around the corner, the boys have loved the opportunity to play under bright skies.   It’s amazing how a bit of sunshine puts smiles on everyone’s faces and changes the atmosphere, not just for humans but also for our wild friends.  I spotted Mr Fox in our garden this morning, taking in some rays and clearly ready, as all of us are, for a restful weekend.

Best,

Nick Baker
