The Beacon Rugby vs St John’s Beaumont
The Colts A had their first away game of the season this week at St John’s Beaumont and on a warm autumn’s afternoon, on a bus bound for nowhere – Kenny Rogers would have appreciated the ‘scenic’ route we took.
Thankfully, we still arrived in plenty of time to warm up and get straight into the game and we definitely got on the front foot from the off by scoring some good individual tries. St John’s were committed throughout and kept the boys honest throughout the game. In the second half, I challenged the boys to create more ‘team’ tries when we had the ball and also to work harder when we didn’t have the ball by defending with less players and on both of these – the responses were positive.
To have 7 seven different try scorers (Oliver C, Blake B, Sonny M, Emilio T, Kit R, Xander T-O and Evan A) was impressive and with plenty of other schools to compete against in the coming weeks, we need to keep learning and improving and thankfully, this bunch of boys are showing the mindset for just that.
Thanks also to all the parents for coming to support for the first away game of the season.

The sun shone brightly on Wednesday afternoon as the 1st XIII took part in a quadrangular tournament against St John’s Beaumont A, Belmont A and Belmont B. The opening fixture was against Belmont’s A team — always a special occasion for me, having taught there for five years. It proved to be a thrilling contest, with The Beacon producing fast, free-flowing rugby to edge a 5-4 victory.
Next up was St John’s Beaumont A. Much like the first game, the boys showed great physicality in the tackle and ruck, combined with sharp handling and slick movement across the backline. Their efforts were rewarded with a commanding 6–1 win.
The final match, against Belmont B, was a scrappier affair. Fatigue had begun to set in and the structure wasn’t quite as strong as in the earlier games, but the team’s determination shone through as they closed out the day with a 5–0 victory.
A fantastic afternoon of rugby — well done to all involved!

The Beacon U8A Rugby
Thursday marked the first rugby fixture of the season for the U8A team, who travelled to UCS. The players have been working hard in their Games lessons, developing their passing, catching, and overall understanding of the game. That hard work was evident on the pitch, as they produced an impressive performance against strong opposition. In a 30-minute match played in glorious sunshine, the team’s effort and skill earned them a well-deserved 4–2 victory.
A fantastic start to the season — well done to all involved!
