Baker’s Beacon Blog – Week 30

17 May 2024

Dear Parents,

Readers of this column may remember that this time last year I proposed trading House Points for pictures of ‘Beacons in Bluebells’ and was delighted to be inundated with great pictures of Beacon boys in and amongst whole carpets of bluebells in our beautiful surrounding Chilterns countryside.  Maybe it is a result of the slightly wetter/colder conditions in recent months but on my various bike rides over the past few weeks, I haven’t been that impressed with the bluebell showing this year and thus not compelled to take and share any picture of my own – maybe next year.  Nature always has a way of coming up trumps though, and last Friday I should have launched ‘Beacons in Borealis’ such was the excitement amongst my WhatsApp communities with various pictures of this freak geographical phenomena.  In what was an odd quirk of modern society, the scene seemed to look more impressive as an iPhone photograph rather than in ‘real life’ but a treat all the same and amazing to see in Hertfordshire rather than the ‘over promising/underdelivering’ of having been to Iceland three times on school trips over the years and never seeing anything but cloud.  My mum told me there were queues up Coombe Hill in Wendover at midnight on Saturday where the crowds were disappointed not to see a repeat of Friday’s conditions.  My favourite story though was of these two lads in Norwich, particularly the response from Premier Inn – made me smile…

It is the last week of this half term next week as we continue to motor through The Beacon school year.  Sports Day for Years 3 to 8 next Friday and I have been ‘promoted’ to the James Skea role of ‘Scorer’ alongside Mark Walker this year.  High pressure job…I might just find myself working alongside Patrick and Joseph with their Maths A Level/GCSE revision this weekend…

Have a good weekend,

Nick Baker
