Rotary Technology Tournament 2023 – Winners!

24 February 2023

We were thrilled to be announced as the winners of the foundation category at the Rotary Technology Tournament 2023 today!

It was a tough tournament hosted at the Chiltern Hills Academy, with several schools competing in teams of four from Amersham, Chesham and Great Missenden. Schools included Caldicott Prep School, Chesham Prep School, Amersham School and Holmer Green Primary School.

The foundation level is available to pupils up to Key Stage 3 to compete. All teams have to solve the same task of which is an interactive technology-based task that competitors are required to design, develop and build a solution with the materials supplied.

There were two teams of Beacon boys from our internal Masters of Innovation competition – a House competition whereby boys from Years 5-8 volunteer, team-up and collaborate to compete (one boy per Year Group and per House). The top-two House teams from the internal competition had the opportunity to compete in the Rotary Technology Tournament. Cromer and Eddystone were successful in competing head to head.

A huge congratulations to the winning team who did a sterling job planning, designing, and creating the radioactive material grabber. The task was to design a technical ‘grabber’ mechanism that could be triggered from a 2-meter distance to grasp and retrieve the ‘radioactive comet’ (a tennis ball) from a Perspex box. Eddystone manage to master the grabber mechanism super quick into the tournament, so much so, a team of A-level students from The Chiltern Hills Academy approached them to receive advice on the mechanics behind it to create a replica grabber, which ultimately achieved them the winning place in their category!

Superb work to the Eddystone winners – Jo M (Year 8), Cassius J (Year 7), Nikolay A (Year 6), Thomas B (Year 5).

A huge well done to our Cromer team who also successfully completed the task and managed to grab the radioactive comet – Theo T (Year 8), Adrian T (Year 7), Rory S (Year 6), Sebby T (Year 5).

Both teams were excellent and Mr Van Rooyen was extremely proud.

The Rotary panel comprises of retired expert engineers and designers who are passionate about technology, seeking real industry designs. The Mayor of Amersham and the Mayor of Chesham attended the event.
