An Array of Delicious Dishes
Our Year 6 MasterCook Competition did not disappoint! The three cook-offs saw an incredible array of talented boys showcasing their culinary skills. With flavours from around the world, each dish was impressively presented and tasted delicious – the final decision of shortlisting twelve boys for the final was difficult to make. The dishes included a venison wellington with red wine reduction, Yakitori Chicken Skewers, Churros with chocolate and strawberries as well as a Aloo Tikki Chaat. The level of creativity, presentation, and technical skill impressed everyone involved. The boys should be very proud as they surpassed themselves, highlighting how much they have developed in cooking skills.
The twelve finalists were thrilled to welcome a new guest judge – the pioneering twice Michelin-starred chef and TV personality, Atul Kochhar, attended The Beacon to support our boys and adjudicate the Year 6 MasterCook Final. Atul was astonished by the standard of dishes he watched being prepared and served by boys of such a young age for his final tasting. His expert feedback and encouraging words made the event even more special for our young chefs.
Claiming third place with a tasty selection of sushi accompanied by a Salad and Matcha Tea, was Christopher Detre. Tien Varsani was then crowned as runner up in second place with what was described as a “fabulous” Palak Paneer with Lachha Paratha, served with Onion Pickle and Mango Puree. Lastly, coming first place was Dhruv Patel, who made a Spiced Fish on a warm, handcrafted tortilla, layered with lettuce, ripe avocado and house-pickled légumes (carrot and jalapeño). The dish was finished with a maison mayonnaise and a drizzle of coriander-infused huile. Chef Kochhar described it as “brilliant”.
Atul said the entire group impressed him with their “fantastic” dishes and that overall it was an extremely close call when marking each dish. After speaking with the finalists, every boy shared how much they enjoyed the experience. We can’t wait to see what culinary creations they cook up next!
