A Taste of Enterprise at The Beacon
Our budding Beacon entrepreneurs have been getting their hands dirty! Over the past few weeks, our boys have been busy harvesting rhubarb and green tomatoes from our very own Kitchen Garden to produce a delicious home-made seasonal chutney: Green Tomato, Rhubarb & Ginger.
This has been far more than a cooking project – it’s a full-on enterprise experience, giving pupils the chance to explore what it takes to run a small-scale (cottage) industry, right here at school.
What Have They Been Learning?
As part of the project, pupils have developed a wide range of practical and academic skills, including:
🔪Food Preparation Skills: Knife safety and preparation techniques
⚖️Accurate Measurement: Weighing and measuring ingredients precisely
💷Recipe Costing: Calculating the cost per jar and understanding profit margins
➕Maths in Action: Upscaling small recipes to suit larger production batches
📰Business Planning: Learning the basics of product development and marketing
The results?
🫙Rows of beautifully made chutney jars, proudly prepared by the boys, ready for our Open Morning and to be sold at our upcoming Christmas Fair.
Can You Guess?
We challenge you to guess how many kilograms of green tomatoes and rhubarb were harvested from our garden this season! The final tally might surprise you.
Look Out For…
Our homemade chutney jars will be available to purchase at the Christmas Fair – a perfect festive gift or a tasty addition to your holiday cheeseboard. Every purchase helps support future school enterprise projects and encourages our boys to keep growing – in every sense of the word!
