Oscar Leads The Beacon
We were delighted to appoint our Headmaster for the Day, Oscar F (Year 5), who secured the role through last year’s Beacon Parents’ Society auction.
Oscar followed a busy schedule of activities, thoughtfully designed to introduce him to the responsibilities of his new role.
He began the day with a short meeting with our Head, Nick Baker, before heading to Assembly to hand out awards and commendations. Afterwards, he visited the school kitchen, where Chef Dino gave him a fascinating behind-the-scenes insight into how everything operates. From a detailed tour of the kitchen to icing his own cupcakes for pupils to enjoy during lunch – he even prepared cheese on toast as a snack for the Estates Team. Oscar threw himself into the experience and left the session with a great deal more culinary knowledge and operations of a professional kitchen.
Next, Oscar made a pit stop with the Estates Team, where he kindly shared his home-made cheese on toast and chatted about all things Beacon. After his snack, it was off to IT for a one-to-one session, where he began designing a screen visual to be displayed on our TVs throughout the school.
In addition to this, Oscar attended several lessons throughout the day, including Maths, English and History, gaining a well-rounded experience of school life from both a leadership and pupil perspective.
One of the most exciting parts of his day came when he rejoined the Estates Team for a special trip to the main Osborne Building roof. Carefully climbing the ladder – under the close supervision of staff – Oscar made it to the top of The Beacon, where he received an informative overview of the school grounds with a superb view, before waving down to his envious friends during their break time.
Lunch was another highlight of Headmaster Oscar’s day, with a specially reserved table awaiting Oscar and five of his friends. To make the occasion even more special, they were given a skip-the-queue pass.
In the lead-up to his big day, Oscar had pre-selected the lunch menu himself, which was proudly displayed around the Dining Hall. The menu featured
Carrot and Coriander Soup, Chilli Con Carne accompanied by sour cream and chives, taco wraps with spiced tortillas, followed by a choice of rocky road or cupcakes. As a final personal touch, the cupcakes Oscar had iced earlier in the day were waiting on his table for him and his friends to enjoy together.
After lunch, Headmaster Oscar headed to the Marketing Office, where he set to work capturing the day’s events in his own words. He wrote his own version of the day as a News Story and recorded a short video, sharing his favourite moments and reflecting on his experience:
“I really enjoyed being Headmaster for the day, I liked everything I did including having a tour of the kitchens! It was a wonderful day, and I especially liked going up to the roof. Choosing the lunch was brilliant and the cupcakes were delicious. Handing out commendations in Assembly was very fun, and I managed to advertise “The Teachers who turned on the students” play that me and some other Year 5s are performing in. At the end of the day, I thought I was actually replacing Mr Baker’s job as Headmaster! I would definitely recommend this experience to anybody who would like it.”
To top off the day, Oscar had the pleasure of dismissing our younger pupils before returning to class once more, bringing a memorable day as Headmaster for the Day to a close.
