Major fast-food companies such as Subway and McDonalds are being criticized by health experts, social scientists and labour rights. The Centre of Science started to raise awareness in 2021 about how unhealthy, for the young generation, these fast-food are and how unhygienic they are. Not many people know about this, and awareness is being raised which may lead to major fast-food companies shutting down.
Subway sandwiches launched a website called subwaytunafacts.com to address allegations and clarify that the source of their tuna after being accused of not using real tuna. However, the fact remains that the Subway sandwich contains (according to the BBC) 6 to 10 grams of sugar, and the larger sandwich contains 14 grams of sugar in summer 2021.
In addition to the allegations about serving unhealthy food, McDonalds have also been accused of harassment by their workers. A year after a manager from a particular McDonalds branch promised to eradicate all objectionable behaviour at the fast-food restaurant, one 19-year-old worker named Matt told the BBC that some of the colleagues were scared to go to work as the manager was claimed to still pester the workers. Furthermore, McDonalds has faced criticism due to animal welfare practises especially to the pork and broiler chicken. The company have committed to improve their animal welfare. At the moment the animals have poor sanitation and the use of fast-growing breeds for food have led to health problems.
When interviewed a teenager from a local school has suggested that he would rather eat food he enjoys then worry about the nutritious value in the food this shows that young people are not too particular about what they put in their bodies. Over the recent years 21.2 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds are obese. However Kishan P has suggested that a balance diet is key when enjoying fast food one should also balance his diet with nutritious food.
It appears that the fast food chain is focus on their profit margin over general health of the public.
