Year 8 Battlefields Residential 2025

Exploring World War One Battlefields

Last week, our Year 8 boys embarked on an insightful and educational three day trip to see the World War One battlefields.

The boys travelled to Ypres, Somme and Arras where they visited Museums, explored trenches, a quarry, as well as learning about and seeing many important cemeteries and memorials at each destination, including a German cemetery. Some of the boys were honoured to be given the opportunity to make personal pilgrimages for their families.

As part of a ‘Show & Tell’ our Year 8 boys were thrilled to dress up as WW1 soldiers whilst being educated on all the soldiers personal kit taken into battle. They also learned about the evolution of gas masks.

The trip was a wonderful culmination of the work done in English and History this term. The poetry of EA Macintosh, John McCrae, William Noel Hodgson and Owen Sheers were shared and read by boys further highlighting the contemporary relevance of all that they have studied and seen.
