The NHS on strike

‘One million appointments cancelled due to staff of the NHS on strike.’ This quotation was taken from BBC News. Staff have gone on strike after being angry about their poor pay and unsocial shifts, which are not good for their wellbeing. NHS (or National Health Service of England) employees went on strike in 2023-2024. Some doctors started to strike outside of the hospitals and grew in numbers forcing others to take more shifts.

In 2023, The Guardian said that ‘junior doctors are to challenge the government over their falling pay in real terms with a campaign which highlights that they are paid a lower hourly rate than some store workers.’ It is outrageous that junior doctors get paid less than a person that works at a coffee shop.

Although the public would be affected as the tax would increase there was not as much rebelling against the strikes as expected as some people understood. However, some patients expressed frustration and disappointment with service disruptions, while others showed support for the striking staff. Some people, particularly those directly affected by cancellations, expressed negative sentiments, while others acknowledged the strike’s impact on patient care.

To sum up what has happened, over the time period of the event, the NHS junior doctors went on strike as they were getting paid too little, but, if the government were to pay them in full they would be badly damaged economically. However, the NHS staff need to be paid.
