The U10 hockey team enjoyed an excellent and memorable afternoon at the tournament hosted by Merchant Taylors’ School on Friday 13th March. The boys demonstrated great enthusiasm, teamwork and determination throughout all three of their fixtures, ultimately finishing as well-deserved winners of the event.
Our opening match was against the hosts, MTS. The team started brightly, showing good structure and composure in possession. A solid defensive display ensured that chances were limited for the opposition, while quick passing and intelligent movement created opportunities at the other end. The breakthrough came when Peter S finished confidently to give us a 1–0 victory. It was a positive start that set the tone for the remainder of the afternoon.
The second game saw us take on York House in what proved to be an exciting and evenly contested encounter. Both sides played attacking hockey, resulting in an entertaining match with plenty of goalmouth action. Peter S once again found the net, while Teddy S-S and Barney K also scored well-taken goals. Despite the team’s efforts and some determined defending, York House were able to respond each time, and the match ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw. The boys showed excellent resilience and character throughout.
Our final fixture was against St John’s Northwood, and the team produced their most complete performance of the tournament. Passing was sharp, movement was purposeful and the defensive unit worked tirelessly to regain possession. Peter S was in outstanding form, scoring a superb hat-trick, while Wilf W added a fourth goal to secure an impressive 4–1 win.
Overall, the boys played extremely well all afternoon, supporting one another and representing the school in a highly commendable manner. Their teamwork, effort and positive attitude were evident in every match, and they were deservedly crowned eventful winners of the tournament.
Well done, everyone!

The Beacon U9A v University College School

The U9A football team travelled to UCS on Saturday to take part in their annual U9 football tournament. The boys, along with the staff, were determined to build on last year’s success, when The Beacon won the tournament, and they rose brilliantly to the occasion.
The boys were outstanding throughout the morning, playing some excellent football with great energy, teamwork and determination. It was a highly competitive tournament with no easy matches, and every game demanded focus and resilience. In our five league matches, we won three, drew one and narrowly lost to UCS in the group stage.
A strong finish in the league saw us qualify for the final against UCS, setting up an exciting rematch. The boys showed tremendous character and were not deterred by the earlier result. In a closely contested match, Mateo G produced a moment of real quality, scoring a superb long range goal that flew into the top right hand corner. It was a fantastic strike and a truly memorable way to secure both the final and the tournament.
This was a brilliant team performance, with every player contributing to a well-deserved and impressive victory. Well done to all the boys who took part.

2nd XI Football V Belmont
![]()
Wednesday saw the final football fixture of the term, as the team travelled to Belmont in glorious sunshine. The boys made a superb start, racing into an early lead with three well-taken goals and adding a fourth just before half-time. Their dominance in possession and territory meant our goalkeeper was largely untroubled throughout the first half.
With a comfortable 4–0 advantage, the team’s shape became slightly stretched in the second half, as players pushed higher up the pitch in search of more goals. This allowed Belmont to capitalise on a few counter-attacks, scoring three breakaway goals.
Despite this, the boys remained in control overall and added a fifth to secure a 5–3 victory. It was a strong performance and a fitting way to round off a very positive football term.
Well done to all involved!

Senior 3rds v Belmont
![]()
The Beacon 3rds rounded off their football season in style with a resounding 9–1 victory over Belmont on Wednesday 18th March. In the week of St Patrick, it was clear the boys had channelled their inner Celtic spirit, showing tremendous fight, determination, and teamwork throughout an excellent afternoon of football. Coupled with glorious weather and superb pitch conditions, it proved to be a fitting and enjoyable finale to the season.
The match began at a slower tempo, with Beacon taking some time to settle into their rhythm. Early on, passes were not quite sticking, and it took a while for the team to get the ball down and play their usual flowing football. However, once they began to string passes together, the quality of their play improved significantly. Two well-taken goals from Theo K and Leon K ensured Beacon went into half time with a 2–1 lead.
Defensively, the team were solid throughout. Thomas F had a relatively quiet afternoon in goal, thanks largely to the composed and effective work of Kian C, Nisaja D, and Henry S, who communicated well and kept Belmont’s attacking threats under control. In midfield, Henry L and Leon K dictated play, consistently looking to spread the ball wide and stretch the opposition.
This approach paid dividends, as wingers Theo K and Xander KG made excellent runs down the flanks, delivering quality balls into the box for Archie KG. The second half saw The Beacon truly come into their own, applying relentless pressure and showcasing their attacking prowess. Archie KG completed an impressive hat-trick, Leon K added another with a superb header, Theo K grabbed his second, and Henry L netted twice from his new position on the wing.
A fantastic team performance and a brilliant way to finish the season. Well played, boys.

U13 Hockey Tournament at Merchant Taylors'

The U13 hockey team competed in the Striker’s Cup at Merchant Taylors’ School last Friday, facing a strong pool of five other schools. They opened the tournament against tough opposition in Merchant Taylors’ School and Merchant Taylors’ Prep, losing both matches despite determined efforts.
The team responded impressively in their third fixture against York House, producing some of their best hockey of the day to secure a well-earned 2–1 victory. This positive momentum continued into the next match against St John’s Northwood. Although the game finished 1–1, the team dominated possession and created the better chances, unfortunate not to come away with the win.
In their final match against St Martin’s, the boys delivered an outstanding performance. Showing great teamwork, energy, and composure on the ball, they controlled the game and ran out convincing 2–0 winners. This result secured an excellent 3rd place finish overall—an impressive achievement given the high standard of competition.
This tournament marked the final hockey fixture for our Year 8 boys. They should be extremely proud of their efforts across two fantastic terms of hockey.
Well done to all involved.

The mighty D2s travelled to Berkhamsted on Thursday for a triangular fixture against Berkhamsted and Chesham Prep, enjoying glorious sunshine throughout the afternoon.
The opening match against Berkhamsted got off to a challenging start, with an early goal conceded. However, the boys showed great determination and resilience, continuing to work hard and battle for every ball. Their efforts paid off in the second half with a well-earned equaliser. With just 30 seconds remaining, they produced a dramatic winner to seal a fantastic 2–1 victory for The Beacon.
In the second match against Chesham Prep, the boys once again demonstrated superb commitment. There was no shortage of energy, with excellent running, tackling, and passing on display throughout. Despite their efforts, the match narrowly finished 2–1 in favour of Chesham Prep.
Overall, it was an outstanding afternoon of football. The boys’ work rate and attitude across both games were incredibly impressive—they more than earned their match tea.

Cross-Country at Oratory Prep School
On Thursday 12th March, our pupils in Year 4, 5, 6, and 8 competed in the highly anticipated cross-country event at Oratory Prep School. In true cross-country fashion, the glorious weather we’ve been enjoying gave way to rain and an arctic blast, providing the perfect test of determination, grit, and teamwork.
What made this event particularly special was the scoring system. Unlike most competitions, which count only the first three runners, this event added up the positions of the first six runners from each team. This meant that victory would not just come from the fastest boys at the front but from every single runner giving everything they had, even those further back in the pack. I explained to the boys that the race would be won by those who kept pushing, even from 20th or 30th place, because every single position mattered.
And push they did! Every Beacon pupil ran with determination, resilience, and team spirit. The Year 5 and 6 teams achieved outstanding success: both teams took Gold medals, and both with an identical score of 78, with Year 6 achieving the highest score of 20. This means that all six runners finished in the top 20 out of over 60 competitors—a phenomenal achievement!
Although the official results for Year 4 have not yet been released, based on the scoring we observed, it’s likely they finished a very strong second place.
Year 8 also pushed themselves to the limit and it was great having boys at top end of the school volunteering to run and represent the school in what is a very long and punishing run for the senior boys.
Days like this are why I love my job. Watching the children push themselves beyond what they thought possible, encouraging each other, and giving their all is truly inspiring. No matter the finishing position, every participant should be incredibly proud of his effort.
Well done to all our Beacon runners for a truly memorable cross-country event!
