Sports Highlights Week 11 2025

U10As Rugby vs Davenies and St Johns Beaumont

The U10As continued their fine form with another two wins, this time against Davenies and St John’s.

The match against Davenies was a very physical encounter, with the opposition showing real aggression at the breakdown and in their tackles. It took a little while for our boys to settle, and Davenies started strongly, scoring a well-worked try to take the lead. After conceding, our boys rallied brilliantly, showing great character to match Davenies physically, and it wasn’t long before we equalised.

In the second half we grew increasingly dominant and deservedly took the lead. Towards the end of the game we added another try, making the final score 15–5 to Beacon.

In our second game, against St John’s, we played excellent rugby throughout, exploiting the space out wide to score a number of well-worked team tries.

Well done to all the boys who took part:

Edward B, Barney K, Hendrix K, Teddy S-S, Macsen T, Peter C, Harley G, Bertie H, Wilf W, Quinn R

U11 Haileybury Tournament

It was a sunny but frosty afternoon at the Haileybury U11 Tournament with Kingshott – the first test for The Beacon team. With our legs tired from a long bus journey, we did not perform our best with Kingshott scoring first, but then Xander equalised. Then, the game got out of hand with Kingshott taking the win in game 1 by 3 tries to 1.

Learning from the mistakes in the first match, we knew it wouldn’t be an easy task against Belmont. Even though the great tackles and rucking by Ollie, Evan, Sonny and Darrshan was impressive, we didn’t prove a match for Belmont with them taking the game by 5 tries to 1.

We knew that this tournament wouldn’t be easy, but with a Buckinghamshire Derby vs Davenies, we thought it would be the perfect response. With some great effort from Blake’s brilliant kicking and fierce running and Sammy’s excellent passes, we still couldn’t find a way to win and let in two tries in a flash.

In the final match, The Beacon (still hoping and trying to get a win) faced Lochinver in a fascinating clash. After us working our socks off, we found a way to provide the win with Blake scoring first. Then he got a double, soon followed by a brilliant pass by Darrshan and sent Xander in for the third. Ollie and Sonny also got more tries, as did Rocky who showed great skill to score direct from a restart – which bounced off the corner flag.

Well done to everybody who played: Alex, Evan, Rocky, Ollie, Blake, Xander, Sonny, Sammy, Lucas, Issac, Evan and the well deserved man of the match, Darrshan.

A huge shout out to Mr Robinson and Mr Powell who spent their afternoon taking us to this tournament.

Thank you.

U9A Beacon vs Davenies

The U9A produced a performance on Tuesday vs Davenies that can only be described as gloriously barbarian in spirit and borderline champagne rugby in execution. From the first whistle they played with a freedom and confidence that showed just how far they’ve come over the course of the term.

What stood out most was their willingness to play what was in front of them. Rather than taking the safe option, the boys backed their skills—throwing audacious offloads, keeping the ball alive through contact, and linking up with a fluency that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a Barbarians highlights reel. Some of the interplay was so slick it had the touchline gasping and one or two parents wondering how their boys could produce rugby like this at 8 years old.

Their attacking flair was matched by a defensive effort of real grit. Time and again they flew off the line, tackled as a pack, and refused to give their opposition even an inch. It was relentless, organised, and fiercely committed.

With the Headmaster watching from the sideline, the team rose brilliantly to the occasion. Every player contributed, every player learned, and every player left the pitch with muddy knees and wide smiles—always the sign of a good day’s rugby.

If they continue in this spirit we may have to find a new adjective beyond “champagne” to describe their brand of rugby.

A superb outing from a group who are beginning to look every inch the team they’ve been working hard to become and still remain undefeated.

U11B2s vs Davenies B

The U11B2s finished their season with a hard-fought contest against Davenies B. Although the boys made a poor start and allowed the opposition to settle quickly, they showed excellent resilience to regroup, refocus, and come back much stronger as the game progressed.

Once they settled into their rhythm, the team produced some of their best rugby of the season. The rucking was a real highlight, with players committing fully at the breakdown and securing the ball and progressing well into attacking phases. This improvement in structure and work rate allowed the boys to create several well-worked tries and shift the momentum back in their favour.

Perhaps most impressive was the squad’s attitude. Their positivity, encouragement of one another, and determination to respond after a challenging opening period demonstrated just how much they’ve grown across the season. Every player contributed, and their teamwork and spirit made them a genuine pleasure to coach.

Despite the 9–4 defeat, the performance showed clear progress and character. The boys should be proud of how far they’ve come and the way they represented the school in their final fixture.
