Rob Biddulph Captivates Young Beacon Readers
National Storytelling Week came alive on Tuesday with a multi-dimensional show from bestselling author and illustrator, Rob Biddulph. Clothed in The Traitors-style hooded black cloak, he introduced his new book ‘The Last Wolf’, a spine-tingling werewolf adventure charting the exploits of four friends in the town of Moonhaven. The audience of enthusiastic pupils in Years 3 to 6 were encouraged to howl, panto-style, whenever an image of the full moon popped up on screen as Rob introduced himself and talked about how his career progression from comic-obsessed child, art director on publications such as NME and the Observer Magazine, award-winning picture book writer and Covid-cult figure with his Lockdown ‘Draw with Rob’ YouTube videos to author of longer novels for older children.
This was followed by a wonderful workshop led by Rob, who demonstrated how to draw an owl — later revealed to be hidden in the background of his latest book, The Last Wolf. Our pupils were even given an exclusive sneak peek at the book a day before its release, along with a signed copy.
The presentation concluded with a semi-animated film of Rob’s charming story ‘I Follow The Fox’ – a Beacon Christmas recommendation a couple of months ago – with musical accompaniment by the man himself, on guitar.
Our Librarian and Storyteller, Susannah Howard, commented:
“A truly memorable author visit – and I think it is true to say that the children have never had more beautiful dedications than those hand-written by Rob on more than 90 books yesterday!”
