Gothic Tales

Redheart Theatre tell chilling Gothic Tales

On Tuesday 15th January, Year 7 enjoyed a visit from Redheart Theatre to tell some chilling Gothic Tales.

Our boys have just started reading ‘Hound of the Baskervilles’ which is set in the Victorian era. It is part of a group of fictional stories that were very popular at the time and formed part of the Gothic genre. They have been learning about the key elements that are used in Gothic stories to create a dark atmosphere.

During the workshop, they were presented with two gothic stories, ’The Red Room’ by H.G Wells and ‘The Tell-tale Heart’ by Edgar Allen Poe.

H.G. Wells is better known nowadays as a science fiction writer but ’The Red Room’ was no less impressive than his other works. It employed many different gothic techniques to create a terrifying atmosphere. This along with scary sound effects and alarming acting even had some teachers screaming!

Edgar Allan Poe was fascinated with Gothic writing and the macabre. This story goes into the mind of a killer and shows him proving his sanity to the reader whilst going mad.

These stories left the boys utterly speechless (and this is quite an achievement!) Brilliant acting and thoroughly terrifying stories combined to make a bloodcurdling performance.
