Celebrating Chinese New Year in MFL

Exploring Chinese New Year Traditions

In Modern Foreign Languages, Years 1 to 5 enjoyed culturally themed lessons to celebrate Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year), whilst learning about the traditions and significance of this popular celebration.

The children were fully immersed in the festivities, from decorating their classrooms in bright colours to participating in a range of creative activities. They designed masks, learned the Lion Dance, created dragon puppets and fortune tellers, made horse origami and performed traditional Chinese music using cymbals and drums.

Through the story of ‘The Great Race’, they learnt how the Chinese calendar came to life to determine the 12 Zodiac animal signs. They explored lucky foods, enjoyed watching spectacular performances from around the world – from New York to East and Southeast Asia – and had the opportunity to try on beautiful Chinese outfits, which proved especially popular.

To finish, our pupils created red envelopes filled with messages of kindness to share with their friends, many of which were taken home in the hope to receive some generous donations!
