Our Year 8 boys stepped into the shoes of a journalist this week, with our BBC Young Reporters day.
The morning kicked off with a thorough briefing of the task, some tips on writing news stories and how to interview effectively, prior to our boys beginning their research. Eagerly, the young reporters sifted through broadsheets and tabloids as well as online news sources to find a compelling, trending story that they could put their own twist on. Topics ranged from Maritime Piracy, AI, Lions Rugby, life in the day of a Diplomat and coverage of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys musical influence and life.
After choosing their topic, the roving reporters arranged interviews to support their stories. This meant preparing engaging questions to prompt an interesting conversation and entice listeners. Some of our boys were fortunate to interview high-profile professionals, such as TV Presenter Tess Daly about “How can traditional TV compete with short form video across social media platforms” or British Ambassador Nicola Pollitt about “Behind the Scenes in the ambassador network”.
Through these activities, the boys built on their organisational skills as well as media creation and comprehension. We were highly impressed with their diligence and style of reportage.
