Baker’s Beacon Blog Week 7 2025

Dear Parents,

A two week break beckons and for some of our boys, the holiday season has already started, with my phone ‘dinging’ with regular updates from the Year 8 Battlefields Trip and Years 5 and 6 Football Tour to Lisbon these past two days.  As the football team arrived in their smart tracksuits yesterday morning, I was sympathetic for their parents, who, hoping rather expecting an emotional farewell embrace from their sons, received no more than a glance over their shoulders and a nonchalant, confident stride into the Quad.  I suppose that is reassuring in itself but having spoken to a colleague at lunch who had tracked the aeroplane that was transporting her son on his gap year to Australia earlier that week, as parents, we can’t help ourselves but to crave news and assurance that all is well.  One day these boys will have children of their own and will no doubt be able to empathise then, but for now, we will all have to rely on the comfort of modern technology and the ‘Beacon WhatsApp Announcements’ threads.

That seemed like a very speedy first half of term but if anything, this has simply been the aperitif for what will be the main course of all sorts of fun and games for the second half of the Autumn Term at The Beacon.  A busy school is a great school and the calendar is packed with all manner of events to build the excitement as we approach the hysteria of the festive season.  Not that the boys need much encouragement of course, with the smiles and laughter emanating from the corridors and classrooms on a daily basis, every day is like Christmas Day at The Beacon!

Have a great Half Term,

Nick Baker
