The primary aim of the department is that pupils enjoy geography at The Beacon and be inspired to be fascinated and inquisitive about the world around them. It is an increasingly important subject as society becomes more global in nature and issues such as the environment will affect future generations as never before.

Fieldwork and Visits

These are essential for studying geography, enabling pupils to learn an enquiry based approach. Current fieldwork / visits undertaken are:

  • Year Three: local area study around school
  • Year Four: visit to Cadbury's World exhibition as part of economic activities topic
  • Year Five: record weather data around the school
  • Year Six: record weather data using the automatic weather station linked to a computer at school  and microclimate data
  • Year Seven: five-day field-course. Emphasis is on providing an opportunity to appreciate ones own and contrasting localities and cultures, co-operate with others and reinforce the more theoretical class-based learning.
