Here at the Beacon we recognise that we live in a highly scientific and technological world. Our aim is to promote the learning of science by setting problems and seeking strategies to produce answers based upon scientific fact. In this aim we use a multi - disciplinary approach, encompassing, the natural world, the material world and the physical world in their widest senses.
Science in Pre-Prep
In this age group basic science concepts are taught and integrated into the normal curriculum. The emphasis is to teach our pupils to ask questions, and to use practical means to help them formulate their answers.
Science in the Prep School
Two specialist science graduates teach all the Science. The course is modular and is taught in twelve short units of 10 - 12 weeks each. Each unit will cover one of the 3 science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics). Wherever possible all science in the prep school relies heavily upon practical work and we are fortunate in having a well-equipped laboratory and specialist junior science room which would be the envy of many senior schools.
In a nutshell the aims of the Science Department are to:-
- Encourage scientific methods of investigation
- Appreciate the contribution that science makes to society at large
- Promote interest in, and enthusiasm for science
- Sow the seeds of a possible scientific career in the minds of our boys
- Encourage a problem-solving approach
- Enable boys to work as part of a team
We teach boys to value their scientific endeavours, the role of science in the world at large and to enjoy scientific challenges. We are always willing to show and discuss with parents the experiments and science syllabus too.
