Art and Music Fusions

12 June 2020

We are really excited that our Year 4 and 5 boys have taken part in a new community project launched by the Chiltern Arts initiative, which was set up to bring music, literature and art to the towns and villages in and around the Chiltern Hills.

This project, called ‘Striking a Chord’, introduces young people to classical music, encouraging them to actively listen and think about the music they are hearing.  Each week a different piece of classical music is selected and members of the community are asked to think about how it makes them feel, or what images it conjures and create a piece of artwork to portray that.

Year 4 and 5 really enjoyed taking part in this project and have looked at how visual artists have been inspired by music – specifically the abstract compositions of Kandinsky. They have listened to Stravinsky’s Suite from the Firebird and have created expressive and thoughtful art pieces to interpret the music in a visual form. They have experimented with a variety of marks, shapes, colours and textures to form their rhythmical and patterned compositions.

You can see some of their artwork on the Chiltern Arts website and hopefully some pieces may be chosen to appear in the Chiltern Arts 2021 Festival exhibition.
