If Rugby School can give him half the gifts that The Beacon has, then he will be enormously fortunate.

Years 7 & 8

The Beacon has a large and vibrant Year 7 and Year 8.  Our boys are highly successful in their applications to the leading senior independent day and boarding schools.

Boys study a rich curriculum through the Prep School Baccalaureate (PSB).  The Beacon has been at the forefront of the development of this national scheme which seeks to build on Common Entrance and to offer a more challenging and relevant curriculum. It was introduced at The Beacon for boys in Year 7 from September 2013 and grew out of our Beacon Certificate of Achievement (BCA).  The Inspection report of 2011 commented that “the Beacon Certificate of Achievement, a programme of study for Years 7 and 8, greatly enriches the pupils’ educational experience and provides a challenging and relevant curriculum, investigative and independent learning and clear and rigorous assessment.”

Year 7 (11+) Entry

The Beacon has an intake of boys for entry into Year 7.  In Year 7 and 8 boys are prepared to sit for the PSB, Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations to independent senior schools.

  • Visiting the school: either at an Open Morning or arrange an individual meeting with William Phelps and tour of the school.  Please fill out the Arrange a Visit form.
  • Registering your son: either request or download the Registration Form, complete and sign (two signatures normally required) and return together with a cheque for £100 made payable to The Beacon School.   Registered boys are placed on a waiting list in order of date of registration.
  • Assessment: invitations to attend an Assessment Day are sent out to parents of boys who are registered for Year 7, towards the end of the Autumn Term before entry.  The boys are assessed through Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning Tests, reports from current schools and observations made during the day as the boys attend lessons and informal interviews.  We hope the boys enjoy their day spent at The Beacon, seeing the facilities and meeting the teachers and current pupils.
  • Offer of a place: offer letters are sent out to parents of boys who have been successful following the Assessment Day.  Parents are given a date by which to return the Acceptance Form and deposit cheque (£750) to secure a place for their son in Year 7 for the following September.  A letter is sent from the Admissions Office acknowledging receipt of the Acceptance Form and cheque.
  • Joining: boys are invited to attend a moving up day in the Summer Term before joining and packs with handbooks are sent out to parents at a similar time.  New Year 7 boys are invited to come to an induction afternoon the day before the start of the Autumn Term, to meet their Tutors in their rooms, locate their lockers and familiarise themselves with the school.
  • Uniform: the School Shop and second hand uniform shop are opened on moving up days for parents to try for size and order uniform.  Both the School Shop and the second hand uniform shop are open during the term-time and on a number of days during the summer holidays.  Appointments can be made with the Shop Manager through the Registrar for boys joining mid academic year.
